A friend of mine has a 1700 Vmax. Every time we get together he says it's a fast bike.
From a dead stop I whoop his ass every time...for around the first 1/8-ish mile anyway
The advantage for me is, no wheelies. My BF Goodrich bites and I'm GONE. I love it.
It's not a "fast" bike but it is full of surprises

All I can contribute is: *MY* ‘98 Magna Deluxe, debaffled, ran 13.02sec @ 104mph in the 1/4-mile at a sanctioned track, just a few years back. Also, *MY* ‘86 VMax, with Kerker and jet kit, ran 10.96sec @ 124mph at this same track back around ‘91 or so. Further readings on these and others I’ve had at the strip can be found here:
https://v4musclebike.com/forums/show...Guesses&page=2

As to top speed on the Gen1 VMax - for me, 130 is PLENTY fast on that thing!!! Anything above that, somebody else needs to ride it. But, boy, is it fun getting to 130!!

Back to the subject of the thread:

Today I removed the baffles of my Vance & Hines 'Short dick' exhaust, cleaned the filthy (carbon, brown discoloration) end caps with chrome cleaner and 0000, put in V&H re-pack since there was no packing in the exhausts and only the faintest traces of there ever being packing in it. (I guess they got these pipes back in '96) Getting the allen bolts that hold the baffles in was fun for the lower exhausts. Had to dremel a line in the bolts and use and over-sized screw driver because I EASILY stripped the 4mm allen bolts and then stripped them as T25's as well.
New bolts from Home Despot with anti-seize later along with a nice polishing of the back of the pipes and securing the lower exhausts more tightly, as it seem the PO didn't tighten those down as well as they could have been.

So, now the bike's still loud, and I knew it would be, but I did lose a few dB and the sound feels more 'focused' a more tight tone when I ran it to burn off the tape used for the packing.

If anyone care for the pictures of hours of work.

They're not brand new, there's some marks, but for a set of [probably] 20+ year old short dick pipes, they're looking as good as they ever have for a long, long time.
/end report

Put on the 6v Chevy horns today.

If you want loud, run old school 6v truck horns. You will NOT be disappointed.
My Ford Taurus (Fiamm) horns had NOTHING on these

EDIT:
Just in case anyone is curious

New chain today. A screw on link is very interesting but it doesn't interfere with anything.
Tried to straighten the chain guard with a heat gun. Worked...for the most part anyway.
Looks a little better. I'll try again tomorrow.

Installed my new to me Leather Lyke hard mount bags, really happy with the way they fit and look. I know they are limited in weight allowance but to hold my coat, long sleeve shirt and gloves plus tools they will work well. Still vacillating putting the Cobra Slash Cuts i bought new recently. May offer them up as an unopened package from the factory.

Why vacillating?

I drive for a living. 2 jobs. 70 hours a week. Lots of city core and suburbia, fair bit of slab. Loud pipes help, but barely, especially if I have music or a podcast going in the car. By the time I hear them they're in my blind spot unless they're just holy shit straight pipe obnoxious. The only instance the drag pipes do help is when I'm sitting at a light and I can hear a guy idling, but can't see him. Then I know someone's there and to keep an eye out. I wouldn't be able to hear a Magna rider, even in my work van with next to no sound deadening, with Cobras or stock pipes on, even if he was sitting right next to me if my windows were up. Same for my car, which has poor sound deadening. (Fiesta ST)

Then there's the Cobras. They're not loud. At all. Removing the end caps from your stock exhaust is probably slightly louder than the Cobras unless we're talking 7,000+ RPMs. (Had them on my previous Magna) Their tone is better than stock angry bumble bees, they look better (IMO), they save weight but they require a re-jet, although I've heard of no running issues with them on. It's not like if you put them on and then re-jet to what carbjetkits tells you that the bike suddenly runs 'ok'

Hope this helped.

Last 2 weeks I've just about finished my Magna. (Too busy last year to do it, but it was perfectly acceptable at 90% done.)

-Put e-bay LED headlight in e-bay LED headlight bucket instead of OEM bucket which never fit right and had bolts hanging out front to hold the LED light in. Looks much better now.
-Chrome trim around the gas tank (This was actually for function over form, but I do quite like the way it looks. So that's helpful. Gas tank has slight 'crinkles' in a few spots where the tank goes flat on the edge. The chrome trim 99% hides that.)
-Touch up paint pen/paint with a small brush used for some spots on frame, engine casing and rear fender paint where my saddlebag rubbed through (now addressed with those aluminum stays that hold the bags back from the fender)
-Cleaned, ceramic coated and coat of wax next week to top it off (It's a $1200 paint job on this bike and I'm trying to make it last for as long as it can before it starts getting all sorts of marks and shit on it as I don't garage queen this bike.)

Pretty much done and going to get an updated walk around video soon. That's my humble brag for bringing a $1000 junker up to something far from showroom, but 'pretty good' condition in my eyes.
